31 Days of Organizing for a Better 2010: Build Your Savings

Join us all month for 31 Days of Organizing for a Better 2010!

Over the past couple years, the economy has wreaked havoc on millions of families’ financial stability. Layoffs, the housing bubble and reduced spending have impacted many, many people and illustrated the importance of having money in savings for times such as these.

I know one of our goals in 2010 is to continue to build our savings. Here are some ways to get disciplined and grow your savings account this year:

1. Set up automatic transfers to your savings account.

If you wait until all the bills are paid and everyone has spent what they want to spend in a pay period, there won’t be any money left for savings. Instead, set up your direct deposit to put a certain amount in savings or use automatic transfers to move money from your paycheck into savings as soon as it hits your account. Increase the amount you save as you’re able to but be sure to revise your automatic transfer so that saving continues to be automatic and not something you have to think about.

2. Stretch yourself and put more in savings than you think you can.

Although there are people who literally have every penny accounted for and no waste in their budget, there is room for improvement for a lot of us. Think about the amount of money you spend on impulse purchases or Starbucks even when the budget seems tight. Instead of adding the bare minimum to savings each pay period, stretch yourself to add more rather than leaving that money as spending money.

We have banked locally at Wachovia for several years, and their Way2Save account has been an easy way to build our savings. Every time we write a check or make a purchase with our debit card, $1 is transferred to  our savings account. It’s really helped us stretch our budget and make saving a priority.

Today, Tara from Deal Seeking Mom is sharing how using coupons can help you build your savings account, which is another great way to stretch your budget to include more savings!

3. Use separate savings accounts for different purposes.

While we’ve used Wachovia for a long time, we’re in the process of switching over to ING Direct as our main bank. There are a lot of things I love about ING, but the best part is the ability to create many different savings accounts with the click of a button. Referred to as sinking funds by Tsh from Simple Mom and others, multiple savings accounts let you earmark portions of your savings for specific purposes, such as gifts, vacation, car repairs, etc. so that you have money set aside for these things without risking your emergency fund.

4. Don’t touch your emergency fund unless it’s an emergency.

If you are committed to building your savings, it’s important that you commit to only using earmarked funds for that specific purpose. It’s all too easy to deplete a savings account because you’re overspending. If you don’t think you can take a hands-off approach on your own, keep your checking account at a separate bank so that transfers between the two take more time and energy, making you less like to do it on a whim.

5. Every little bit helps!

Remember, every little bit you put in savings helps, whether it’s $1 a week or $500 a month. Create a habit of saving and watch those funds grow. As your income grows, you’ll be more likely to increase your savings if you’re already in the habit of saving, and watching your account balance increase steadily is great motivation!

Do you have a savings goal in 2010? What’s one thing you can do differently this year to increase the amount you save?

Great ideas here. I have found that if you transfer the money out of your everyday spending account straight away, you generally don’t miss it too much. We were much better at saving when we had 1.5 or 2 incomes. Aside from our initial transfer of money into savings, we used to put whatever we had left at the end of the fortnight straight into the savings account before our next pays came in. Unfortunately on one income, we don’t have much available to save. Our budget is pretty stretched now, so we just try to put any additional money we may have onto our mortgage.

    • Mandi Ehman

I think transferring it right away is one of the keys, definitely!

It’s definitely more difficult on one mortgage. I know some people earmark any “extra” money that comes in for savings, but we usually look at that money as house project/school supply/activity money.

would like to find a great coupon organizing that you can carry with you to the store – most r tooo big or toooo little. Help.

    • Mandi Ehman

I’m afraid I’m not much help in this area, Margie! I’m not a serious couponer, and so I just use a small coupon organizer. There are so many options out there, that it’s hard to say which is the best, but I’m hoping to do a post about the various options in the future!

i have many bank accounts. i opened these bank accounts not only for saving but also to establish my banking profile. if ever i needed to make a deal with the bank, loans for instance, they can take a look at my record and see that i’m a diligent saver and the bank would trust me.

i also have an issue with atm because when i withdraw money from a different bank’s atm, i get charged so a little portion of my savings is taken away! as much as possible, i only withdraw using the atm when very much needed

For me it’s my iPhone and Internet in general- It’s a bad habit to be sitting somewhere for just a little while and notice that I pick up my phone to check facebook/twitter even though I just checked it a minute ago (or look at the local 911 dispatch website to see what’s going on).

It’s definitely blog-hopping. I will not start a Facebook account or Twitter because I know I’ll be on here all day long. Not enough discipline to stop until I’ve read every new post of my many blog subscriptions. It’s an illness, I think. Help!

Without a doubt, blogs & facebook are my biggest time wasters. I have thought about deactivating my facebook account several times…but then think about ‘all the news’ I’ll miss out on. In defense of blogs, I think I learn about some great ideas from some of them out there!

  • http://www.theparentvortex.com Michelle @ The Parent Vortex

Reading twitter and surfing around on the internet. I’ve started putting the laptop away much more often throughout the day and I am getting a lot more done. I love the internet, but I really do not NEED to check twitter 246 times each day.

Definitely the internet, whether it’s my laptop or Blackberry. I am seriously going to start putting myself on a schedule because it’s way to easy to get lost in surfing the web, checking email, RSS, Twitter, Facebook, etc. I actually shut everything down last night, including the tv, and picked up a book instead. This digital age can be distracting.

  • http://www.penn-fam.blogspot.com Missy June

Without a doubt, television can be a time waster…I get intriqued by mindless entertainment that has no benefit in my life. An hour or two later, I wonder how I’ll accomplish the necessary tasks!

Yes, the internet can suck me in, also. But really I’m only reading what interestes, educates or connect me so I don’t consider it time wasted. This time must be mananged, though, or those necessary tasks will be ingnored!

For me it’s (I like that word :) ) and reading/absorbing information in general. I wouldn’t consider it wasting time, because I think it’s inspiring and educating most of the time, but since I still got so many other things to do, it sadly is. I try to look at it in a positive way, allowing myself just to “wander around” the internet for a limited amount of time (maybe 1-2 hours) AFTER I got stuff from my to-do-list done. This way I can enjoy it even more :)

Reading blogs, commenting on blogs, commenting on more blogs, reading blogs… did I say reading blogs… commenting… checking to see who is reading our blog… and then commenting on those blogs… and then following the links on their blogs and commenting there… I think I will stop already!!!

A day later and I am thinking that all that “time wasting” is probably time my mother would have spent on the telephone and her mother would have spent at tea parties and maybe we just need down time – but in our hectic life we might “Allow” ourselves a bit of time-out, but never as much time as we need!!! When I am energized and good to go I would never linger at my computer but dash around doing stuff…
      .-= se7en´s last blog ..Se7en Things I wish I had Known About Homeschooling… =-.

      • Mandi Ehman

You know, I don’t think those things are time wasters either. I think there’s a huge difference between relaxing and walking away energized and just zoning out and walking away feeling drained. Does that make sense?

  • http://www.butterbeanandpeanut.com Christi

I would have to say facebook is a time sucker for me. i end up spending way more time than planned checking in with everybody!

  • http://www.abitoffreshair.blogspot.com katherine

Blogs and the internet in general. I find myself, when done with e-mail, facebook and blogs, sitting at the computer, wondering where I could go next on the internet…..when in reality I’ve spent over an hour at the computer already. Sometimes it’s a waste of time!

The internet….I constantly check it to see who wrote something new or sent me a message. It keep me in-the-know but I realize I don’t need to be THAT in-the-know. Any tips on limiting this would be appreciated. Does anyone use a timer??

  • http://www.friendlyfrugalista.com Cara (aka Temberton)

Laundry, dishes, sweeping, mopping…..Hahahahaaaa! Just kidding. I’m going to be unique and say the Internet and Television. ;oP I also love to sleep. LOVE IT! If I got up an hour earlier each day, I’d have an extra hour to surf the Internet while watching TV. TeeHee!

Mine is email. I’ve signed up for too many newsletters, devotionals, etc., and feel guilty if I don’t read them all. I should unsubscribe from them and just check out their websites when I have time and want to, rather than feeling like I’m ignoring someone who’s knocking at the door all day.

  • Jenny

Bloghopping and store wandering. I’m terrible about running in to pick up this one thing, then wandering in a daze. I usually have at least one kiddo with me, so that does limit things a bit. Have been trying to cut down on this by stopping off at other places to shop. If I only need milk, will just pick up a gallon at the gas station instead of wandering the big box. As far as bloghopping goes, I get distracted by all the fun links and end up ten pages from where I started. A timer is my friend!

  • http://www.AboutOne.com Katrine (Helping You Manage Wh

Sounds like the internet is a common theme here! It actually makes me feel less guilty when I read that others are getting sucked into the same silly, time-wasters things I am. Just today, I was on a mission to find my son a fridge for his dorm room. Two hours later, I hadn’t found the fridge, but I’d checked out all my friends on Facebook, browsed around some non-appliance stores, tweeted a bit, and checked my email. I need to follow Pappelschnee’s advice and get my work done before allowing myself to get on the internet for a LIMITED amount of time. It’s what I’d tell my kids to do, why can’t I do it myself???

Facebook, definitely Facebook! I was checking it so much at one point, I installed an extension on Firefox to block me out of it during my working hours, ie. when DD is at school. As a writer, I figure I’m actually “researching” when blog hopping though it also takes a lot of my time.

oh oh oh how do you install this extension?????

    Facebook, Facebook, and Facebook!

  • Marina D-K

Definitely my blog reader and facebook. After an 8-9 hour day, a 45+ minute commute each way, feeding our two year old and putting her to bed (if my husband works late), I get completely lost in catching up on blogs on facebook (I don’t have any time to do this at work…) I feel like if I pick up a book I fall asleep and then I don’t have any “me” time…not sure if blog reading and facebook are really “me” time though…=)

  • Heather

My blog reader and the blog hopping that comes from that, but its the yearning to learn things that drives that. I’ve also had to ask my mothers group type of forum admins to change my password on me for some enforced time out to let me get on with living life.

  • http://www.AboutOne.com Beth

I think the biggest time waster for me is trying to do too many things at once and therefore, spending lots of time trying to remember where I was before I got derailed. It takes me all day to get one little task done because of interruptions from email, tweetdeck, chat programs, etc. While I’ve been really busy all day, the things that need be done just get started 30 times.

Around September when frost starts to threaten, I harvest all my basil and make a huge batch of pesto. Then I put it in family serving size baggies and freeze them. It’s one of the fastest dinners! Just put the baggie in the fridge in the morning and it’s thawed by dinner — all you have to do is cook noodles! It’s also great to have on hand for making quick pizzas, sandwiches, or soups.

Thanks for sharing your tips! They’re great!

I just bought a basil plant because I’m dying to make my own pesto; it’s a favorite around here too!

  • http://www.my.tupperware.com/SHERRILLHILTON Sherrill Hilton

I love having a well stocked freezer but don’t use zip top bags. They tend to slide around and make my freezer a mess and they also end up in landfills. I use Tupperware Freezer Mate containers instead. They stack well and come with labels to label everything. Once I use the food in them, I put them in the dishwasher, wash them and then reuse them. This helps the planet stay green and keeps zip top bags out of the landfills.

  • Sarah

This article is full of great ideas; but I can’t “choose a freezer” at this point… I have a pull-out wire drawer freezer, which seems harder to organize. If I could figure out how to make a divider or 2 for it, I would be doing much better.

It is full of freezer bags – of organic flour, oats, blueberries, pesto cubes, etc. I reuse the bags as much as possible – at least if it contained dry food.

I like the idea of shaping cookies and flash freezing them, but in the past I have just wrapped extra dough in plastic wrap and put it in a reused (and re-labeled) freezer bag. Unbaked scones is my latest favorite, and shaped biscuit dough might work as well.

    Thanks for the wonderful ideas!

BLOGS FOR SURE. There’s so much information out there, and I love to see what everyone is talking about…
I only check my reader once or twice a day, but there are just so many that it usually takes an embarrassing amount of time just to skim—not even read/absorb them, let alone put my favorite posts into Evernote. My Mac is glued to my lap in the evenings after my littles are in bed…I think my husband is starting to resent the thing. ;-)

    Hi Mandi!

My time waster for the month (maybe for the year) has been Twitter. I get in there and I get lost talking to people, retweeting, and jumping around. I’m have Twitter ADHD.

The organized, productive side of me is working non-stop on solutions and tools to solve this issue. I think I’m about to have a breakthrough.

Until then, see you in Twitterdom. Loving blessings!

    • Mandi

Well, I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Ugh….facebook. I just “have” to be in the know…but do I really? No…perhaps this blog with have to replace that addiction….baby steps, right????

  • http://www.colabears.com Kirsten

For me it is the internet in general been it Facebook or just browsing but I am in progress of changing that and get more organised.

    Leigh,

I could have written that exact post!! :) That is totally my problem. I’m ready to invest in some timers for my family and I to help manage our time better. We’ll see if it works.
