Question of the Day: Have You Filed Your Taxes?

With just a little over a month to go until Tax Day on April 15th (also the 11th anniversary of when my hubby and I started dating, back before Tax Day really meant anything to either of us!), I’m embarrassed to admit that I have barely even started my tax preparation. I’m hoping to make some headway soon, as I don’t want to be stuck trying to sort out a mess at the last minute.

If you’re still working on your taxes, here are some posts from last year to help you get organized:

:: Preparing Your Taxes: Thinking Through Your Needs

:: Preparing Your Taxes: Make a List

:: Preparing Your Taxes: Planning for Next Year

So today’s question of the day is…

Have you started your taxes? Have you filed already?

Where are you in the process?

What things do you wish you’d done differently? Will you do them differently this coming year?

What’s the hardest part about filing your taxes?

I’ve got my husband and I’s pretty much done, and will hopefully have the filed today! I’ve started making a point of trying to do it at 2-3 weeks in advance of the deadline, so as to minimize any slowdowns on the government side of things.

We signed all of the papers this weekend and mailed them off. My husband has a small business that is an S corp, so we hired an accountant years ago. It is worth the cost for us to have him prepare them properly. And good news we don’t owe and are getting back a small refund.

We are done, filed on a Friday, had the refunds (state and federal) in our account by the next Thursday. Ours are simple and straightforward, however, so Turbo Tax saved the day.

I haven’t started yet. I use Turbo Tax. The hardest part is writing the check to pay the bill since we’ll owe money. I wait to file until the last day or so in order to keep our money as long as possible.

I agree with Selene!! The hardest part is writing the fat check that we owe. I am actually early this year; usually wait until the end to hold on to our $$ as long as possible, but with baby due 4/4 I wanted to get them out of the way beforehand. We still haven’t sent them off but they are done!! Just trying to figure out if I did something wrong since we weren’t expecting to have to pay so much. But with income and rental properties maybe we just do! Turbo Tax makes it easy but I still wonder if I’m not answering something right!

I think the hardest part is GETTING STARTED! It seems like such a daunting task, but once I get moving, it all pulls together in a few hours. My boyfriend still has to do his local taxes, but our state and federal are all filed. We did it for free through Turbo Tax through my account with Vanguard. I love getting bonus services!

I have already filed my taxes. MD State Taxes even already cashed my check. Still waiting for my Federal Return, though. I filed last month once I knew I had all of my W-2s. It was a good activity when the snow storms hit, actually. :P

I just started mine last weekend. I’m getting a refund so that should motivate me, you would think! But even with TurboTax, it just seems so complicated these days. I know TT tries to be helpful but the tax code is just too snarled.

What I’d do differently: Keep track of all of my childcare expenses throughout the year! Boy, is it hard to go back and track them all down, between after school care bills (which vary every month), summer camps in various places (that sometimes got canceled or transferred, so there isn’t a clean “statement” for them), etc. Of course, here it is, mid-March and I haven’t started to track those yet! Whoops. Good reminder to get that going. :-)

We did our taxes but haven’t sent them in yet since we owe. This is our first year owing EVER!! We have no idea how we’ll pay it so we’ll be sending a good faith check and letter to both state and IRS and just start paying.

I wish we’d have had more $ taken out each paycheck to better cushion our amount due. We’ve adjusted our paycheck deductions but we will no longer have enough to get by.

    Time for seconds jobs! :)

We’ve done the H&R Block thing, the do them at home with TaxCut thing and now, for the first time ever, we are using an accountant. Between my blog and my husbands freelance work, our finances were getting too complicated for my comfort level. We met with the accountant yesterday and while we haven’t gotten the bill for the prep work, I am already very pleased with our visit. I learned some things that we could do to save some money and appreciated her suggestions.

I did a lot of prep work in advance – the accountant said “you are smart – you know that the more work you do ahead of time, the less you have to pay me!”

I have learned that I need to devise better tracking systems for the entire year… while I did all that prep work.. I was doing it the night before our appointment!

We had ours done back in the middle of Feb. My husband doesn’t like to wait around. We get all of our paperwork together as soon as possible in January and as soon as everything has been mailed to us we try to get it finished fairly quickly. Which is fine with me. I hate to wait to the last minute on things like this.

My husband filed in January and got our return mid February. This is the first year my husband has not been self employed and hence the return. We have owed the last couple years and it has not been fun. Child credit went up $500 per child too. Woohoo! This last year we made the least ever with the transition of me being home with the kids. However it has stretched us in ways like nothing else. We also got the biggest return ever. So it pays to have me home in more ways than one.

Have you started your taxes? Have you filed already?
I’ve started them but haven’t filed.

Where are you in the process?
I still need to enter one item for a deduction and then review them with my husband.

What things do you wish you’d done differently? Will you do them differently this coming year?
No. I keep a file folder for any tax-related documents and put things that come in (like donation receipts) in it right away so there is no hunting around at tax time.

What’s the hardest part about filing your taxes?
Getting my husband and I in the same room for an hour without kids to review everything.

Well…my husband is a tax preparer so we usually get them sent in just before the deadline, lol. We also usually pay, so this works out fine. Actually he has them done already. We’re getting a refund for a change this yr so we really should get them in, but we’re on the bottom of his list. It is nice that I don’t have to mess with. Although I am the one who collects much of the info. On Dec 26th we set an envelope out that all tax documents go into immediately upon arrival. It does make it pretty easy overall.

We’ve had our taxes done since the middle of January and had our refund by the end of January. The only thing we changed this year was from going to H&R Block last year to doing it ourselves this year! I’m glad we did it ourselves- saved money in the long run, didn’t have to keep kids entertained and I was done in 30 minutes!
